The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
