Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
